Coaching Questions and Answers
Don’t I just need more willpower?
Not necessarily. Discipline has its place. But if you’ve been pushing hard and still find yourself stuck, something deeper may be going on.
What’s often labelled as “lack of willpower” is more accurately a tangle of self-doubt, anxiety, internal resistance or exhaustion. These are not moral failings. They’re human realities and they’re workable.
High performers in other fields know this. Top athletes, CEOs and artists don’t try to muscle through everything on their own. They know that meaningful, sustained change requires support, strategy and reflection, all of which you will get in coaching.
What does coaching involve?
Coaching involves regular sessions, usually held online via Zoom, or in person in East London. When we first meet we’ll clarify what you want to get out of the sessions and where you want to be by the time we finish working together – though of course this ‘meta’ goal’ may develop and change as we progress in our work.
So we do set a time-frame for the coaching, but this isn’t a ‘programme’. In each session, you’ll set the agenda for today. We’ll decide where you want to get to by the end of our session and work on that.
We may look at your projects, goals, habits and blocks, but also the emotional and psychological patterns underneath them. And then you’ll leave each session with greater clarity, and concrete actions to move you forward.
How long will coaching take?
We begin with a first session to get a feel for the work and see whether it’s a good fit. From there, we’ll put together a structure that suits your needs, typically working together over three to six months or more.
One session can help you get started. But change (inner and outer) takes time. Most of my clients work with me over a long period, with some opting for monthly sessions and some choosing more intensive support.
Will you tell me what to do?
No. But I will help you find your own best answers.
This is not prescriptive coaching. It’s about creating a space in which your own thinking deepens and in unearthing what’s getting in the way. I bring structure, psychological insight and experience, but the direction comes from you.
Will we talk about the past?
Only if it’s relevant.
Coaching is essentially future-focused and solution-focused. But if patterns from the past are still shaping your present, we won’t ignore them. That might include early school experiences, family expectations, or past creative failures that still carry weight.
If we find that you could benefit from deeper therapeutic work, I’ll let you know and direct you accordingly.
